Powerful storytelling. Impact. Purpose.
Hannan Adely
Experienced, award-winning journalist highly skilled at reporting and writing stories that inform, inspire and impact American communities.
A reporter for more than two decades, Hannan Adely joined The Record and USA TODAY Network in 2010 and quickly found a niche uncovering unique and important stories about New Jersey’s diverse communities.
Adely is adept at developing sources, identifying and covering emerging news trends and skillfully weaving stories about families and individuals that shed light and understanding on wider social issues, national debates and international conflicts.
Among her achievements, Adely has delivered hard-hitting and exclusive stories about secret police surveillance in New Jersey, relayed gripping accounts of refugees’ lives before and after their arrival in the U.S., and exposed Haiti’s systemic imprisonment of deportees from the U.S. and the extortion of their American families. Her coverage of Haiti deportees sparked international outrage and aided the release of illegally detained men.
She has written about cases of discrimination that have captured America’s attention, including breaking news about a Muslim mayor’s rejection from a White House Eid celebration and the closing of Muslim bank accounts under a sweeping anti-terror law.
Adely has given a voice to communities celebrating life and tradition in stories about faith, Middle Eastern food and culture. She has documented how artists, filmmakers and activists fought to improve representation of Arabs and Muslims after 9/11.
In addition to her reporting, Adely has also hosted and participated in panels for journalists about inclusive and responsible coverage of Arab and Muslim communities.
Her work has appeared in the Bergen Record, USA TODAY, the Star-Ledger, the NY Daily News, the Associated Press, the Journal News, the Chicago Tribune and numerous other publications.
